Little Bear’s big day, part 1

My sweet little boy is now a big three year old boy! I’ve spent the week decorating for Christmas, cleaning the house in preparation for his party, and baking, baking, baking. His birthday was Thursday when we celebrated as a family and I made a test run of the fire truck cake. I was fairly pleased with the results. Here are some of the highlights from his big day. I’ll post the party pics in a separate entry.

Of course he got a fire truck for his birthday!

Notice the writing on the shirt? Just too perfect!!

The cake

After we’d eaten cake, Little Bear looked at the leftover cake and said, “Fire truck cake broken!” with a horrified look on his face. It was yummy, though.

If you love chocolate cake (and chocolate frosting) like I do, you can’t go wrong with the recipe on the back of the Hershey’s cocoa box. Beware, if you use the Special Dark variety, the cake will be almost black. I opted for the traditional style this time.

As for the baking, baking, baking-I made this fire truck cake, sugar cookies for school, sugar cookies for the playgroup Christmas party, gingerbread men cookies for the party, and another fire truck cake. I do love baking, but the clean-up is killing me!!

  1. Happy Birthday to your son! The cake looks so good. And he is so cute. 🙂

  2. Happy Birthday Little Bear. What a great cake. We love Chocolate but I am not sure I could have pulled off a fire truck cake. Nice Job!

  3. What a great day!
And I have to confess that the chocolate cake recipe on the back of the Hershey’s cocoa box is my secret “signature” cake that I make for people’s birthdays… instaed of frosting, though, I make a batch of French Silk Pie, and use it as the fillling and the frosting. Indulgent, yes, but so worth it!! I’m impressed with the fire truck, too! Good for you for having so much fun with your little guy’s birthday!

  4. Happy Birthday Little Bear! We sure do miss you guys. Our boys would have so much fun playing together at this stage.
I know what you mean about the clean up. I can’t seem to keep my kitchen clean to save my life. As soon as I get one mess cleaned up it’s time to bake for another party. Needless to say, we’ve been eating out way too much this holiday season because I can’t bear to dirty anymore dishes.
I hope you guys have a blessed Christmas.
